NBA GameRater

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

The NBA GameRater is a new feature of the NBA Scoreboard addon for Firefox.

A simple algorithm (tabulated below) evaluates each game and assigns a rating on a scale of one (blowout) to four (knife-edge). Ratings change as the games progress and are determined by the lead size.

Now you can quickly identify the most exciting games in the drop-down menu.

Rating
1st Q 4+ pts 0-3 pts
2nd Q 7+ pts 4-6 pts 0-3 pts
3rd Q 10+ pts 7-9 pts 4-6 pts 0-3 pts
4th Q 10+ pts 7-9 pts 4-6 pts 0-3 pts

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

The latest version of NBA Scoreboard 2010 has arrived. It includes some minor bug fixes and some internal coding requirements that you don’t care about, and that were probably the most tedious and time-consuming tweaks that I’ve had to make. However, it is all for the best. Changes in detail:

  • Overtime games display (OT) in the drop down menu. (Bug #3)
  • Boxscores and recaps for Utah Jazz open correctly. (Bug #4)
  • NBA Teams preferences save correctly. (Bug #5)
  • Respected the global namespace with ffNBAScoreboard js object wrapper.
  • Cleaned up code with JSLint syntax checker

Use your Local Time

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

NBA Scoreboard 2010 now shows tip-off times in your local time. No longer will you be thinking…

“The Celtics game starts at 8:00PM eastern time. Now, my timezone is GMT+4, and because it is the northern winter, ET does not have daylight saving, meaning it is GMT-5. That’s a total difference of 9 hours, meaning I need to add nine hours to 8:00 pm which is 17:00 pm which is 5:00 am. Right, the game starts at 5:00 am.”

Use Local TimeJust select Options, Advanced and check the ‘Use local time’ box, and NBA Scoreboard will do all the maths for you.

NBA Scoreboard v3.10.3 available

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

The latest version of the NBA Scoreboard 2010 addon for Firefox has been released as NBA.com undergoes a major site upgrade. If you have visited NBA.com in the past week, you will have noticed a few changes.

  • The Scoreboard has been replaced by the GameLine. The GameLine incorporates both scores and schedules, as well as game leaders, broadcast information and video highlights.
  • The GameInfo page now has the preview, the boxscore and the recap in the one page.

The underlying data exchange has also been upgraded from XML to JSON. I expect that these changes will eventually have major implications for the current data extractions techniques used by NBA Scoreboard 2010. However, I will not be deterred and will make every effort to ensure that NBA Scoreboard remains the most useful and comprehensive NBA addon for Firefox.

Visit the NBA Scoreboard Forums to ask questions or discuss future versions of the addon.

Hornets 110, Suns 103

As an upgrade-day post-script, my thoughts on the Suns loss to the Hornets on Friday, as broadcast on One HD. I found myself expecting the Suns to win this game. Having seen the same game unfold against the Rockets – get behind early, watch Frye shoot bricks, come back for a tight fourth quarter – I was expecting the same result. But the Hornets played basketball down the stretch and the Suns stood around watching. Peja woke from a slumber and the Suns earned an L. An off night for Phoenix or a sign of things to come?

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

October has arrived and the NBA pre-season has started. During this time, both NBA.com and NBAScoreboard.net get ready for the start of the new NBA season. It is a time for testing and ironing out bugs. NBA.com have made some slight changes to their scoreboard and these changes are reflected in the latest version of NBA Scoreboard 2010.

Download the latest version, or try opening your Add-ons window in Firefox and clicking ‘Find Updates’.

[Note: Some features of NBA Scoreboard will not be fully functional until the scoreboard at NBA.com is fully functional. Example: During the pre-season, players names may not be available on the NBA Leaderboard. This is not a bug with the addon.]
