The Phoenix Suns return to the Conference Finals for the first time since 2006, the second trip since Steve Nash signed as a free agent in the summer of 2004. On the previous occasion, the Suns were outlasted by the Mavericks who went on to lose in the NBA Finals to the Miami Heat.

As a Suns’ fan, this is going to be the highlight of the Steve Nash era for me. It wasn’t until last year that Australians received free-to-air NBA games. Now, when One HD has exclusive coverage of the WCF, the Suns break through, exceeding expectations in all quarters.

2010 has to be the year for Steve Nash and the Suns. With the Lebron era upon us, there is an expectation that any of he, Dwyane Wade or Kevin Durant will be winning title after title for the rest of Nash’s career. The 09-10 squad has a unique chemistry and plenty of confidence after sweeping the Spurs.

This season is already a runaway success for the Suns. With many experts leaving them out of the pre-season playoff mix, they’ve had homecourt advantage for two rounds. With most experts picking the Spurs to end the fairy tale, they’ve dusted off the brooms.

Now the Suns are certainly the weakest team left in the draw. They’re supposed to be eliminated quietly by any of the Lakers, the Celtics or the Magic. The pressure is off. So with my expectations in check, it is time to settle back and enjoy the coverage. Go Suns!

The 2010 NBA Playoffs are coming to One HD in April, May and June. Channel Ten have stated that:

ONE brings you up to 15 LIVE NBA Playoff games from the first and second rounds. Plus exclusive coverage of the Western conference finals series and delayed coverage of the best of seven NBA Finals.

ESPN has posted the first round schedule for the NBA Playoffs day-by-day and NBA.com have it series-by-series. I expect that One HD will be broadcasting games available on TNT, including the Western Conference Finals. Check the One HD guide for local times across Australia, but more reliably, check this schedule at NBA.com.

The playoffs are just around the corner, so it’s time to settle in for the stretch run of the NBA regular season on One HD. Follow all the action with NBA Scoreboard for Firefox.

April 9
12:00 PM, Cleveland @ Chicago
2:30 PM, L.A. Lakers @ Denver
April 14
12:00 PM, Boston @ Chicago
2:30 PM, Denver @ Phoenix

There is a log jam behind the Lakers in the Western Conference, and One HD is carrying plenty of crucial matchups. The big one is the Denver-Phoenix game to round out the season. How will the seedings finish? Other highlights include:

  • Charlotte Bobcats. With new owner Michael Jordan, and their first sight of the playoffs in franchise history, the Bobcats are one team that is generating talk in the East. They’ll be a formidable opponent for the visiting Atlanta Hawks.
  • Lebron and Kobe. Consensus favourites to lead their teams to the Finals, and a back-to-back appearance on April 9.

NBA on One HD in March

Friday, February 26th, 2010

In March, One HD turns one, celebrating twelve months of free-to-air sports in Australia. And the NBA schedule heats up as teams jockey for playoff positions. Follow all the action with NBA Scoreboard for Firefox.

Be careful! Daylight saving switches over midway through March!

Wednesday Friday

2:30 PM, Utah @ Phoenix
March 10

10:00 AM, Orlando @ Miami
12:30 PM, New Orleans @ Denver
March 24
10:30 AM, Denver @ New York
March 26
Delayed, Dallas @ Portland
March 31
11:00 AM, L.A. Clippers @ Milwaukee

The Phoenix Suns enter March on a hot streak, winning 10 from 12. They host the Utah Jazz in a preview of a possible first round matchup, and then later in the month host Minnesota, in a game that the Suns must win. Other highlights include:

  • Milwaukee Double Up. Kenny Smith recently dubbed the Bucks as the fifth best team in the East. With Bogut rolling and finally showing some of the potential that made him a #1 draft pick, the Bucks are more relevant than ever.
  • Mike D’Antoni. The Knicks make their first appearance on One HD. Can Mike D’Antoni get anything out of this roster built purely for 2010 free agency? Carmelo Anthony and the Nuggets will be a stern test.
  • No Lebron. The Cavaliers do not feature at all in the March schedule and will appear only once in April. But I cannot envisage a scenario that won’t see Lebron and the Cavs back on One HD for the Eastern Conference Finals in May.

The Phoenix Suns have come back to earth after their 14-3 start, and are now locked in the battle for a playoff spot in the West. Their credentials will be tested with a visit to Oklahoma City. Other highlights include:

  • The Usual Suspects. The regular appearances of the world’s best basketball players and teams continue. In the East, Cleveland, Boston, Atlanta and Orlando. In the West, the LA Lakers, Denver, San Antonio and Portland. All the big names, all the big teams.
  • Oklahoma City Thunder. The original One HD schedule has been changed to accommodate the rising team in the West – Kevin Durant’s OKC Thunder. Watch Durant, Green, Westbrook and the rest of the young team take on Atlanta, Portland and Phoenix.
  • Debutants. Two more teams make their first appearance on One HD this season. The Timberwolves travel to Detroit on the eve of the trade deadline, and Golden State host the Nuggest to round out the schedule.

The Suns are 1-3 on One HD this season and a visit from the up and down Mavericks will round out the coverage in January.

Other highlights include

  • L.A. Lakers at San Antonio. A meeting of the two preseason favourites to compete for the West in the NBA finals. The Lakers are on track, but the Spurs have started slowly. Who will win their first matchup of the season?
  • Boston at Orlando. A rematch of the Christmas Day duel of two Eastern Conference heavyweights.

The lowlight is

  • Two L.A. Clippers games. Are you excited about Baron Davis? Or Marcus Camby? Let’s hope that Blake Griffin is ready for the Denver game.

NBA on One HD in November

The 2009-10 NBA season gets into full swing on One HD in November.

2:30 PM, Chicago @ L.A. Lakers
November 25
12:30 PM, Golden State @ Dallas
November 27
12:00 PM, Orlando @ Atlanta

As a Suns fan, I’m looking forward to seeing the team come up against some decent opposition – LA Lakers, Houston and New Orleans. The 3-0 start, with wins over the LA Clippers, Warriors and Wolves, is nothing to take pride in. If the Suns are going to have a shot at the playoffs, they have to win games against teams like the Rockets and the Hornets.

Other highlights for the neutral fan include

  • Cleveland at Miami. Lebron James and Dywane Wade face off in a battle of true NBA superstars, and coveted free-agents-to-be.
  • Golden State at Dallas. Don Nelson takes the Warriors back into Dallas, with memories of the 2007 first round playoff series victory fading.
